In The Studio 3

As you can see we still have a lot of boxes to check off, but we're doing pretty good on time. All the big stuff is mostly taken care of minus the remaining vocal tracks, but besides that it's mostly some guitar things and aux perc. stuff. Collectively we've scored millions and millions of points playing Burnout Takedown on the studio ps2 and have eaten pounds of ramen noodles. However, morale is high and Alan is powering through these vocal parts. Everything's finally coming together and starting to sound like a record.

In The Studio 2

We're back to work after having a day off yesterday. It mostly constisted of us lounging in our hotel room for way too long... but we did end up getting out last night to see our friends Portugal The Man who played with the RX Bandits.

Portugal The Man's set was incredible, and the place was packed. Bill and I both ended up having way too much to drink, but I did manage to catch a few songs from the rx bandits before retiring back to the van with the spins.

We all managed to keep cool yesterday by going for a little swim.

This morning Bill popped a couple of ibuprofen for his headache and went straight to work on some guitar tracks. Alan's been working double time recording guitar tracks for a couple hours followed by vocal tracks for a couple hours more... Everything sounds amazing, and Jay has been helping out all over the place from production ideas to microphone selection... he even showed Alan a bunch of goofy stretches to do before singing.

In the studio!

It's day five into our studio session with producer/engineer Jay Robbins. It's a little place called the Magpie Cage in Baltimore, MD. We drove nx for two days to get here after playing the Mile High Music Festival, which by the way, was great. Thanks to everybody who spent a day in the relentless heat with us... but I digress. Anyway, recording is going unbelievably good. Jay is an amazing producer and has turned out to be exactly who we needed to record this record. We spent hours getting the drums and guitars dialed, and everything has been moving very smoothly. The drums and bass are essentially done as well as a lot of guitars. Alan has even started doing some vocal takes.

We'll try to keep you updated a little more often... especially while we're in the studio. Check back often for the next two weeks and we will have tons of new pictures and news.

End Of Tour Thoughts

Wow I can't believe we're home. Two and a half months, our longest tour to date. Which put us past the 250 show mark for the year and it was amazing and I know we played our hearts out every night! I think we're almost road worthy. The guys from As Cities Burn are super cool. By the end we were best friends for sure. Every night was a riot, great sense of humor on those guys and we thank them for taking us out on tour. And we made good friends in Paulson love those guys. Actually all the bands on the tour were great, So Long Forgotten and Oceans firing were awesome too. My favorite shows were Orlando, Wichita (crazy pit for ACB), Wichita Falls (crazy dance party), NYC (of course) and Austin. The last night of tour Collin (bass for ACB) said to me " I know you guys are gonna be going even after all the dance stuff dies down, there's so much more to your band." I thought that was cool as hell. This leads into us working on a new cd. We got home about a week ago and started demo'ing new material with our good friend Sean Lynch. and we're hoping to hit the studio very soon. So get ready! Love to everyone-Alan

New Jersey...drinking in public tickets!!!

so were on tour...
were in New Jersey.
were sitting in our van drinking beers.
all of a sudden two black sedans and a mini-van roll up on us.
all these cops run up to the van and start bustin' our balls.

"have you been drinking?" he asks.
"yes!" I respond.

they then asked for our ID's...were all over 21 so I didnt think it was a big deal.
they started searching the van and I started getting scared.
we told em' that we were a band and from outta state...
they didnt care.

we stood there and after a few minutes they came over with tickets
tickets for "DRINKING IN PUBLIC"
It was lame
we were pissed
we voiced our opinion
we pissed them off
it didnt matter

I would say we fought the law and the law won, but I didnt even know we were fighting the law.
So this one was a draw.

Some pre-tour thoughts from Devon of The Photo Atlas...

The day we left for tour I was sitting in my best friends living room waiting for Bill to come wisk me away for 2 months of van-habitat. He was running late...as usual.  I just wanted you all to know that we'll be adding tour vids for the next two months but I didn't want to talk, so when in doubt, grab a sharpie.

p.s. RIDE THE ROOT.

Billings & Rapid City

so we brought bikes with us on tour this time well everyone but me untill today. we found a bike in the woods by the hotel we stayed last night. the brakes don't work and i kinda felt bad for taking it but we felt like someone ditched it in the woods and it was up for grabs so now we're a bike riding crew. We got to chicago today and there are some crazy kids actually one with a BB gun riding around in a van shouting slanderous terms. crazy.

damn it we couldn't win our poker bracelets back from 1090 club and billings montana. oh well we'll see them again in a week and we'll get em' back! it was a blast hanging out with those guys and Little Brazil. both are amzing bands and amazing people we toured with a year ago. the bilings show was at a brewery and we tried to get extra drinks by washing off marks they were putting on our hands as to how many drinks we had. only three, which sucks but at the end of the night the bar tender gave us two cases for free. so it all worked out. and the show was awesome, i dig the billings scene, dedicated folks.

Rapid City was crazy, this metal band played who literally had a wall of amps, pantera style. it was so loud. they had ten 8 by 10 amps. i had never seen anything like it. then we got into a rumble with little brazil which resulted in them catching me pissing on there van. haha don't worry they got us back. so now we have to get back at them when we see em in a week. we turn into kids when we're on tour. i guess thats why we like it, we never have to grow up. anyhow we are stoked for NY and the east coast. here we go!

oh and lets see who can pick out all my typing/spelling mistakes. winner gets 5 bucks!

like a band of gypsies down the highway

So last night before tour we smashed some bottles and got into a fight with some road cones. We went up to red rocks and hung out with our friends the bravery. As a last hurrah before tour starts. Our two months on the road starts today. And actually being home for three weeks was wierd, the longest home stretch we've had this year. But it was a good chance to write new songs which we'll be playin on tour. and actually i think devon just stayed in tour mode the whole time he was home which consists of crashing on friends couches and floating around bars, and party's and stuff like that. Anyway we're stoked to be back out on the road, our first stop is Billings MO. we've had some rowdy shows there before so we'll see how it goes. -Alan

How it all started.

"Hey man, you have long hair what’s up do you listen to punk rock?" is kinda how this band started, and the reason we're all still together. We're The Photo Atlas and that was ten years ago when I met Bill (guitar) in Junior high. That and the love for the same bands like At the Drive In, Refused, The Faint and Cursive. Devon plays drums, Mark plays Bass and I sing and play guitar. We're from Denver, Co .... I know I know we have a lot of hippies here but there is a solid post/punk scene here as well. When this band got together three years ago we just started by working hard and playing a lot of shows locally. Then that turned into touring and putting out a record on Stolen Transmission Records.  We've toured with The Bravery and Portugal. The Man.

We're about to start a tour on our way to the CMJ festival in New York and then we meet up with As Cities Burn for a month. So we're going to try to get in as much trouble as possible and film it and tell everyone about it.
